How Sam overcame his diagnosis
Sam moved into one of LEAP’s properties in September 2021 following a short stay at a hostel. Initially Sam did not think it ideal, however he did not want to become street homeless. Sam’s diagnosis of autism contributes to him taking longer to feel at ease with changes in his life. Sam has now been living at LEAP for the last 6 months and, with the support from his Housing Officer, has been accessing a number of helpful courses, including ones on Mental Health, Stress Management and Life Skills. He is also in receipt of support from Lincolnshire Action Trust.
Sam said: “The courses are helping me to find my feet, think more positive and have helped me understand that living at LEAP is an important steppingstone.”
Another hobby which helps Sam to process where he is now and feel relaxed is painting. The way Sam defined it made it sound as an equivalent for writing a journal. He starts with drawing one image, then another and connects these. So it is a picture that builds up over time. Here are some pieces of art created by Sam:
Sam has been a Kitchen Assistant in the past, something he enjoyed and tried to pursue further at the time, but was told he would not be able to manage. Instead Sam did a Level 2 course in Horticulture and has found a passion for the outdoors, plants and wildlife. At the moment he uses this knowledge to look after some cacti he bought for the house, and would like to find a bigger project to practice his skills and gain more knowledge on plants.
