Ashley’s story

Ashley’s story: Ashley is 19 years old and trans. She came to live at LEAP 8 months ago as her parental home situation was not very accepting and had become very strained, leaving her feeling very anxious and low in confidence. Despite living with her parents, Ashley only had room to sleep on the sofa in the living room and at times she would find herself sleeping out in the garage. Ashley explained that her family refused to use her preferred name and pronouns, which did not help Ashley to be her truest self.

“I am grateful that my friend mentioned LEAP to me. She had been living at LEAP for about 1 year and knew they would be able to help with accommodation and support. With my friend’s support, I made contact with LEAP and shortly after I was able to move in. What was even more amazing was that they allowed my friend and I to move into a shared flat which really helped me manage my anxiety around people. I now feel much happier, more confident and more myself with no one holding me down or being toxic around me.”

Throughout her stay at LEAP, Ashley had the headspace to figure out lots for herself and has been supported in learning to budget and look after herself which will put her in good stead moving forward. In fact, Ashley will shortly be moving on from LEAP. She has managed to secure herself a place at university and will be moving into student accommodation. With her natural creativity, she will be studying Illustration with an ambition to move into more Conceptual Art and designing computer animation.
