Ways to find a private rented home

Start your search for a place to rent on the internet.  Ask people you know, friends and family and check local noticeboards and newspapers for any available homes.

Advertise that you need a place to rent


You could advertise that you are currently looking for accommodation and that you need a place to live.  Describe what kind of housing you want, what area you want to live in and how much rent you can afford.  You can put your advertisement on websites such as Spareroom or Gumtree.


If you use social media like Twitter or Facebook you could let your followers or friends know that you are looking for a place to live.  Some community centres and local shops can let you put an advert on their noticeboard.  While many are free other can charge you for advertisements.


Search for property companies online


There are plenty of options for housing online and agencies often advertise their homes on their websites.

Try looking online for the accommodation that suits your needs. Make sure that the property you want is in your price range and the area you want to move into is near to where you work or go to school.  


Ask your local council's housing options service


Talk to your local council’s housing options service.  This is very helpful if you need to find a landlord who’ll rent to you if you claim housing benefit. The council may also be able to help you with your tenancy deposit and rent in advance.
