On Saturday, 5 December 2015, people around the globe will celebrate International Volunteer Day by rallying to support the world’s new Sustainable Development Goals, through initiatives ranging from a massive group hug in Brazil to an online selfie campaign.
This year’s International Volunteer Day (IVD) theme, "The world is changing. Are you? Volunteer!" is challenging each and every one of us to be part of implementing the Goals. The implementation of the world’s previous plan for ending poverty, the Millennium Development Goals, demonstrated that sustainable development cannot be achieved by governments only.
Volunteer groups can be brokers of and provide spaces for engagement, connecting institutional initiatives with volunteer action at the community level. Through people’s engagement and community action, volunteerism fosters local ownership for development solutions, builds resilience, and strengthens preparedness. Volunteering also transforms both volunteers and the people they work with.
Here at LEAP our volunteers are the heart and soul of the charity. Without our volunteers LEAP could not continue its support for young homeless people in Lincolnshire. We want to say a massive thank you to our volunteers and we hugely appreciate their help.
